Sustainability @ BFF
Sustainability is at the heart of how we grow, design, and share flowers at BFF. From responsible sourcing to thoughtful packaging and reduced waste, we’re investing in changes that support growers, protect our environment, and make blooms that feel good to bring home.

It’s Getting Hot in Here
As you might imagine, growing flowers year-round in Minnesota is challenging to say the least, especially given our climate six (or more) months out of the year. Our greenhouses are heated by a boiler system that uses locally sourced scrap wood (supplied by landscapers and arborists) instead of fossil fuels. We also use steam to sterilize and reuse certain types of growing media, and we use renewable resources such as coconut coir and wood fiber soil mix as that growing media!

Good Bugs vs. Bad Bugs
Chemical pesticides are a last resort at LBR. Bad bugs happen, but our first line of defense is predatory insects. In fact, 80% of our production area uses our beneficial bug friends to eradicate pests! We also use temperature manipulation to control the growing environment instead of chemicals. If we do use pesticides, we turn to biorational options that are less harmful to the environment.

There’s Something in the Water
Just kidding, it’s just water. But we do recapture, sterilize, and recirculate water through advanced closed irrigation systems that allow us to have almost zero wastewater. We also capture rainwater that we use to irrigate our potted plants and propagated cuts!
